Chapter Four

It had been a long time since Denim had spent the night with anyone, but Danny had made it easy, curling into him after they’d made love and falling asleep sprawled half over him so he couldn’t move. Admittedly, Denim hadn’t tried very hard. He’d insisted on taking Danny back to the bookstore, too. He wanted to make sure the evil entity was gone. He was pretty sure Danny’s staff would have called if there’d been any more problems, but this gave him an excuse to hang out longer with Danny. Sure, the sex had been great, but he liked the guy beyond that.

They stopped on the way to the store to pick up breakfast sandwiches from Timmies, and he discovered that Danny did indeed like meat -- he’d ordered the bacon biscuit sandwich with extra bacon. Denim had dated a vegetarian once and he had no problem with vegetarians. But he sure had missed meat during those seven months.

They brought their food to the store and Danny took a deep breath as he turned the key in the lock and pushed open the door. Denim could have told him it was safe -- the darkness and heaviness that had been here yesterday was completely gone. He couldn’t feel a trace of that evil spirit.

The doorbell rang as they went in, and Danny turned on the lights. A moment later the bell rang again and both he and Danny turned, though Denim was fairly certain the only one who could see the ghost giggling beneath the bell was him.

“Mavis?” Danny asked.

He nodded. “Mavis.”

“Cool. Merry Christmas, Mavis.” Danny looked around and took another deep breath, then let it out again. “They did a good job -- putting the place back together again, I mean.”

“They did. You’ve got good staff.” You couldn’t tell at all that the place had been a disaster area with no books on the shelves yesterday.

“I do -- I know I do. I try and make this a good environment to work in, so they’ll stay.”

“I can understand why they’re loyal to you -- you engender it.”

“Oh, a two-dollar word -- I like it.” Danny bumped their hips together, then went to the counter and opened up their bag from Timmies, pulling out the breakfast meals and handing Denim his farmer’s wrap.

“Thanks for breakfast.”

“It’s the least I could do after all you did for me yesterday. I still think you should let me pay you.” Danny took one of the pieces of bacon out of his sandwich and ate it.

“No -- I told you I can’t charge you when a good chunk of the energy to banish the thing came from you.”

“Then you deserve a free breakfast wrap.”

“Okay, okay.” Denim leaned against the counter and took a nibble of his wrap. He was more interested in watching Danny than eating. There was something about the guy -- something that drew Denim in. It was his aura maybe. He just felt right to Denim, but in this weird, almost pushy way -- like the universe was trying to make sure he felt it.
